transforming this small plain ensuite in an Auckland home into a spacious moody oasis

Designing a bathroom remotely can be a challenge, but with the right approach and effective communication, it can result in a stunning transformation.

Recently, we had the pleasure of working on a bathroom design project in Auckland, utilising virtual meetings to ensure every detail was perfect.

This project involved creating the right layout, setting the mood, and designing a standout vanity that became the hero of the space.

Here’s how we did it.

a key design component to this small bathroom design was Creating the Right Layout

When we started the design process, it was crucial to understand the client's needs and how they used their bathroom space. One of the main concerns was the existing layout, which felt cramped and inefficient. During our virtual consultations, we discussed various layout options and settled on a plan that maximised both functionality and aesthetics.

To achieve this, we decided to hide the toilet behind the door. This simple adjustment significantly improved the visual flow of the room, making it feel more spacious and less cluttered. Additionally, we enlarged the shower area, transforming it into a luxurious walk-in shower. This change not only enhanced the usability of the space but also gave it a more modern and open feel.

The new layout also allowed us to create designated zones within the bathroom, ensuring that each area served a specific purpose without overlapping. This thoughtful approach to space planning is essential in bathroom design, particularly in smaller spaces where every square metre counts. By focusing on the layout, we were able to create a bathroom that felt both practical and inviting.

the next key design component to this small bathroom design was Setting the Mood

Our client had a unique vision for their bathroom: a space that could be both relaxing in the evenings and refreshing in the mornings. Achieving this dual-purpose atmosphere required careful selection of colours and lighting. After discussing various options, we decided to use vibrant blue tones for the main colour palette.

Blue is a versatile colour that can evoke different moods depending on how it is used. For this bathroom, we chose shades that felt calm and serene when paired with soft, ambient lighting in the evenings. This created a perfect retreat-like environment for unwinding after a long day.

Lighting played a crucial role in this transformation. We installed adjustable lighting that could be dimmed or brightened based on the time of day and client’s needs.

The Hero of the bathroom design was, wihtout a doubt, The Vanity

The vanity is often the focal point in bathroom design, and in this project, we wanted to create something truly special. We sourced a beautiful natural stone that added a touch of luxury and sophistication to the bathroom. To keep costs reasonable, we designed the vanity to look like a large, solid piece of stone while using clever construction techniques to reduce material expenses.

The vanity featured integrated drawers within the thick stone front, providing ample storage without compromising the sleek design.

Below the main countertop, we added a shelf that was perfect for displaying decorative items, adding a personalised touch to the space.

This design not only looked stunning but was also highly functional, offering the storage and style the client desired.

Transforming a bathroom through virtual design is entirely possible with the right approach and attention to detail.

Our Auckland project is a testament to how thoughtful layout adjustments, mood-setting colours, and standout elements like a beautifully designed vanity can create a space that meets all the client's needs and more.
